VHPA WA Volunteer Opportunity
The members of the VHPA WA have been invited to breathe life into the UH1 we have towed through the Auburn Veterans Day Parade by volunteering to assist at the Hands On Children’s Museum in Olympia (HOCM). On Veteran’s Day (November 11th), our orders are to report to the museum between 1
100 and 1600 hrs., check in, and delight the kids (and parents) with our first-hand accounts of our experiences in Vietnam. We’ll be focusing on how the helicopter and its controls, work, and why the sound of its rotors were so welcomed in Vietnam. Remember, these are little kids so we need to be cognizant of their sensibilities. Stay as long as you can, but we will understand if you cannot stay beyond your capabilities or prior commitments.
Guest Expectations
Overview: These guidelines and rules provide information on museum policies, as well as expectations for all guests attending with your group.
- Upon arriving, please park in the back alley behind the museum to unload. Check in at the back entrance reception desk to let them know you have arrived. Your HOCM contact will meet you and help you get loaded in.
- Your car may be able to stay in the back alley but will likely need to be moved to another
approved museum parking lot. You will be directed to the appropriate lot and provided with a parking pass for the duration of your visit. - Your HOCM contact will introduce you to the staff you will interact with during your visit. You may ask them to radio for your contact at any time you need them. Any HOCM staff person with you can also help to answer questions or provide assistance.
- 3’s Company Rule – No staff, teacher, volunteer or guest should ever be alone with a child. There should always be a second staff person, teacher, volunteer, or guest present. This keeps you all safe. Situations where you might encounter this include:
o Public Restrooms – please plan to use the staff restrooms on the 3rd floor or the single occupancy family restroom in the lobby. If you are in the public restroom and child
enters alone, please leave right away.
o Elevator – never ride the elevator alone with a child. Do not enter or exit right away if
there is a child alone. - We ask that you check in with your assigned HOCM contact before moving leaving your station.
Thank you for joining us at HOCM! We are excited to be able to partner and provide these enriching experiences for our visitors.
You will be asked to sign a document indicating you understand these rules.
